Their path towards this honourable goal is clouded by the man’s alcoholism, lost phone numbers, not knowing each other’s names or addresses, and life’s general tendency to place obstacles in the way of those seeking their happiness.

This gentle tragicomedy, previously thought to be lost, is the fourth part of Aki Kaurismäki’s working-class trilogy (Shadows in Paradise, Ariel, and The Match Factory Girl).

I react to the trailer for Sardar Udham, an Indian Hindi language film which deals with the aftermath of the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre (or Amritsar massacre). In 1919 soldiers from the British Indian army, under the command of UK officers, opened fire on Indians peacefully protesting after the arrest of key pro-independence leaders. Many hundreds were killed, with estimates of up to 1,500 casualties. In response, in 1940, Udham Singh assassinated British officer Michael O'Dwyer in London.

Sardar Udham, directed by Shoojit Sircar, explores these events. It stars Vicky Kaushal, Amol Parashar and Shaun Scott.
