Yoriko Sudo (Mariko Tsutsui) is in her 50s and tends to her rock garden each morning, drawing fine ripples in the pebbles. Osamu returns after 10 years, informing his family that he has cancer and wants to live out his remaining days at home. Meanwhile Yoriko's son introduces the family to his hearing impaired girlfriend and reveals they've been dating for a while and are now living together. The new developments shake Yoriko's seemingly peaceful world and reveals the burdens placed on women and prejudices present in society.
