Based on the real-life story of a mainland Chinese teacher who rose to become one of China's wealthiest men through his English-language tutorial centers, American Dreams in China, sees a trio of idealistic young men charting China's social changes from the 1980s to the 21st century, as they first join forces and then fall out over how to realize their ambitions.

The movie release date has been moved from one originally announced as April to May 18th, 2013 to coincide with the Cannes Film Festival.

China, Later Tang Dynasty, 10th Century. On the eve of the Chong Yang Festival, golden flowers fill the Imperial Palace. The Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) returns unexpectedly with his second son, Prince Jai (Jay Chou). His pretext is to celebrate the holiday with his family, but given the chilled relations between the Emperor and the ailing Empress (Gong Li), this seems disingenuous.
